Steven Barkhimer has been playing on the fringes ofthe Boston
singer/songwriter circuit now for 3 years, having written 15 years of music,
from folk to jazz, mostly for theatrical settings, in New York City and Santa
Fe.
"Time Was" is his first release of all-original compositions. Imagine the
Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching, the Gospels, urban angst, bucolic bliss, and
suburban seething all put in a blender, and served up with (amazingly) simple
honesty, wry wit and deep feeling. Fellow songwriter Rob Siegel has said
that the lyrics seem "to be written with surgical precision." The
collection also represents an homage to the off-center creations of early
Randy Newman, the directness and intimacy of early James Taylor, the playful
orchestration of Harry Nilsson, and the pop sensibilities of more
contemporary artists like Shawn Colvin and Dar Williams. The first cut of
the CD, "Time and Tide," is slated for use in the upcoming motion picture, A
Little Inside.
