At St. Olaf College in his native Minnesota, Nathan Thompson ran the mile in 4:41.
Then he sailed cross-country through an ocean of mid-west corn, leaving small-town
America, to land at Boston's Berklee College of Music.
Although he graduated cum laude from that famous music Mecca, his own songs won
out over jazz standards. This is not easy, says Nathan. Jamming to well-known tunes
like 'Round Midnight--while hunched over your guitar in the midst of a cool
combo--does not compare to standing alone at a microphone, mouthing your own
words to your own tune.
Nathan has worked at the craft of writing and performing in the proving grounds
of Boston's acoustic scene: The Black Rose, The Middle East, The Tam, Naked City
Coffee House, Club Passim. He's been featured live on Emerson Radio's WERS-FM 88.9.
He recorded his song Stay So Long for the compilation CD Show-up, Sign-up & Play.
Nathan is influenced by country and blues. His clear, strong voice rings out on his
songs, evoking images of America's heartland with simplicity and detail. From Stay So Long:
I've been putting corn on my window sill
The birds fly up, then they're gone
The birds fly up, then they're gone
They never stay too long
I can't get them to stay so long.
Nathan Thompson hates to wait. His dreams of a life of writing and performing music
for his supper are fast catching up with him. Which is good, because Nathan won't slow
down for them.
